For a while now, I have had an ambition to fly an aircraft… Not because I want to fly 747’s and certainly not for the financial rewards offered by commercial flying, that just doesn’t interest me at all, but because I think I need to prove to myself that I can actually do it… that you can teach an ‘older dog’ new tricks. Now of course I know this may ‘seem’ like a bit of a mid-life crisis… im pushing 40 afterall and it could well manifest as such as time goes on, but I think, deep down, flying is something I have wanted to do since I was very young, since now I come to think about it I saw a certain H.M. Murdoch on a 80’s TV show… which is worrying… any inspiration is good inspiration though… right?
Flying is just such a cool thing to be able to do, don’t you think? the idea and the ‘romance’ of being able to take an aircraft to exciting new destinations, to explore the world from the air… to be able to nip over to france for a bottle of wine, to pop up to Scotland for lunch… to see friends way down in the west country for dinner you haven’t seen in months because driving there takes all day… it’s just going to be so cool, such fun and really SO rewarding, in all senses of the word.
I should say from the outset that EVERY pilot I have met, lives flying, they eat drink and dream planes. They talk in acronyms and mnemonics, continually and confusingly… I couldn’t tell you the difference between QNH or HRH right now, I literally know NOTHING about flying a plane…
Over the coming months, I’m going to show you that a small flying school in Salisbury, really can teach anyone to fly and love it. I am going to document, record, blog, film and keep you up to date with the ups, and downs (pardon the pun) of my adventure. Please do follow this website, find “Go Fly” on Twitter and Facebook and offer your encouragement…
Perhaps you’re also learning to fly, maybe you’re thinking about trying it yourself, are you about to get your license? Could you be a pilot with some words of wisdom for a new student? Whoever you are, whatever your ambition or skill level, I’m looking forward to taking you on the journey with me.
“Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward.”
